When we decided to build our first house, we knew we were in for a challenge. Like many young professional couples, we had a tight budget. In addition, as a top-tier researcher from Germany, my husband’s unparalleled perfectionism can be both wonderful and terrifying!
We met with four different builders (including a project home builder). Their lack of knowledge (and care) for modern evidence-based building practices is just disappointing. We don’t just want to build a good-looking house, we want one that is suitable for Queensland climate, fit-for-purpose, and cost-efficient (why spend money on wasted square meterage)! (side note: stay away from project home builders – some of their building practices are shoddy at best!)
We approached Jay because he was recommended by my colleague. We were immediately impressed by his knowledge of modern building practices. But most importantly, we were impressed by his keenness for continuous improvement. If there is something that he doesn’t know (and there really isn’t much!), he will be up-front and get stuck in to make sure he thoroughly considers the pros and cons. We have total admiration for his drive to deliver a well-constructed house, within budget. Ross is a great supervisor, facilitated site-access, is extremely responsive and thorough. A few times, we bumped into Ross coming back to check the sub-contractor’s work/delivery in the evening! Their incredible work-ethic is contagious – you can see it in the sub-contractors that they keep. They inspired us to care for a better house.
The result was a house that we are both very proud of. Due to cost-constraints, there are still bits and pieces that we plan to do ourselves (e.g. landscaping, fencing etc). But already, each time we look at the house, it reminds me of Jay’s demand-for-excellence and incredible work-ethic. We are (and will be) always grateful for his work.
Building a house is stressful – the stakes are high after all. But I have so much confidence in Jay’s group, I would not hesitate to get them to build our second house (but in the meantime, we have to focus on paying off this mortgage!). Needless to say, I would recommend Flascon to anyone. In fact, my colleague is already thinking of re-financing so she can get Flascon to remodel her house!
